    Sustainability

Why yes, we do think it matters. It matters a lot!

From the fine details to big picture goals, we know our decisions about materials, partnerships, and daily operations can have far reaching effects outside this building. Climate change affects us all. It is personal. We have more progress to make, but here are a few ways we currently prioritize sustainability.
    1. Reduce demand for raw materials
      1. We build our jackets with fabrics made from recycled yarns (Pertex Quantum ECO).
    2. Reduce the use of harmful chemicals
      1. Our fabric and down suppliers are bluesign® approved, so we know their processes and technologies are monitored and certified to minimize impact on people and the environment. All of our down is also RDS® (Responsible Down Standard) approved and certified to be ethically sourced.

While Katabatic Gear is committed to making UL gear that exceeds your expectations, it is equally important that we minimize our negative impact on the planet and its occupants. Whether it’s a special place in the backcountry, or the city you live in, we want to do our part to maintain healthy land, air, and water to keep this a comfy home for all. Though ours is not a perfect plan, we will continue to search for ways to improve our sustainability efforts, and minimize the impact of our operations on the planet.

Winner of a jacket!

When my ghost whisperer hoody finally gave up the ghost, I bought a new one, the ghost whisperer 2. When it arrived, it felt flimsier somehow than the original and I returned it. I did a lot of research, balancing cost, durability and warmth. The Tarn won the theoretical research. I bought one and have now used it twice on early winter backpacking trips in the Olympics. I am really happy with the purchase. One reason I chose it is the 20D exterior fabric - it feels much more durable than the 10D fabric of the competition. It does add an ounce or so, but I think it it worth it in the long run, as are the higher quality zippers. It does not pack down quite as small as some other jackets, but it has more down fill. Temps only went down to high 30’s on my test trips, but the Tarn kept me warm and toasty. I wouldn’t depend on it for my only insulating layer for temps in the teens, but this is not supposed to be a deep winter jacket. I like the way the hood fits and allows for good visibility - the adjustment toggle may add a half ounce but it’s well worth it. I also appreciate the higher situated pockets - I am able to wear this with my pack on and still access the pockets above my pack waist belt. Thoughtful design. I’m really happy with this jacket and look forward to years of warmth.

Tarn Review: Brooks Range AK

Recently took my Tarn jacket for 7 days backpacking in the northern Brooks Range/AK. Loved it! Well designed, lightweight and kept me warm outside in 24 sunlight when temps dipped into the 20's. Comfortable enough to be worn as a cosy extra layer in my sleeping bag. Seriously functional design, great style, color. I'm 5'-10", 142 lbs and between M and L in Katabatic sizing. i went with the large and appreciated the longer sleeves (that most women's jackets don't provide) but the waist was a bit too roomy, tho maybe with winter gear that space will fill in. The Tarn is well priced for a jacket ranks in the upper 1/3 of all down jackets in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ceVWWwGTdc1KcTkIQFWscILPtA2pbgpq0UQQIq1D6gE/edit#gid=0 If you are looking for something light and warm for backcountry pursuits, look no further.

Love it. It is the 2nd one. I lost first one and missing it so much I ordered the 2nd one. First jacket I ordered it through GGG. Ultralight and keeps warm in my hiking as middle layer. Very satisfied.

Warm and light weight

Love the fit and the fabric. I’m always cold but this jacket keeps me warm. Brought it on a 3 week back packing trip and it was the perfect layer for early morning or evenings when it hit cold.
